Drug and Alcohol Counseling

It is difficult to know what to do when you, or a loved one has a problem with drugs or alcohol. Drug and alcohol problems cause serious problems in your life and leave you feeling guilty and unsure of what to do. It is helpful to talk to an understanding and knowledgeable counselor who can work with you to figure out if there is a problem and what to do about it.

Often drug and alcohol use results in a crisis. A family intervention, DWI or other arrest, work or school problems, or a health scare can all result in motivation to seek counseling. Whatever your situation, I am willing to help.

I have extensive experience working with people with drug and alcohol problems and their families. I work with individuals directly and I work with family members looking to help their loved one.

In addition, I am available to design and monitor individualized treatment programs in conjunction with professional licensing bodies, employers, and the court if necessary. If you are in crisis because of your drug and alcohol use I can help you make the changes necessary to get out, and stay out, of trouble.

Addictions Treatment

Are you feeling out of control with your behavior? It is widely understood that people can have addictions to behaviors other then drug and alcohol use. Such “process addictions” include sex, gambling, working, spending, internet use, and computer gaming. The hallmarks of these addictions are the continuation of the behavior despite harmful consequences and a difficulty controlling the behavior. Often these problems are secretive and shrouded in shame. I can help you address these behaviors and regain control over your life.

Couples and Marriage Counseling

People enter committed relationships with people they love. However, when there are problems in the relationship it is difficult for partners to express or receive that love. Sometimes, couples have relationships that are unsatisfactory, even destructive, and lead to negative feelings and patterns of conflict or withdrawal.

Furthermore, relationships can be damaged by such things as infidelity, internet affairs, and lack of intimacy. Other times, stresses such as children and parenting concerns, job changes and moves can lead to a couple’s difficulties.

Couples counseling helps address those difficulties. Through counseling you learn to identify, and change, the negative cycles that stop you from achieving the relationship you want.

In addition to couples therapy I also offer premarital counseling and marriage enrichment sessions. Premarital counseling is designed to strengthen relationships before marriage. Marriage enrichment is for couples who have good marriages but want to feel closer, work on their communication and intimacy, and be more intentional in their relationship.

Personal Growth

Are you “surviving” but not “thriving”? Transitioning to adulthood, finding the right partner and career, grieving the loss of a loved one, a “mid-life crisis”, coming out to friends and family, or finding meaning in retirement are all times when people may feel like their growth has stalled.

At such times, counseling can be helpful. Often, as you move through a period in your life where you feel stuck, you find that change and real growth can occur.

In my practice, I take a personal growth approach to counseling. This means that I work to help you live your life more fully and authentically. In contrast, traditional medical-model counseling approaches focus on diagnosing mental conditions and treating them. Certainly there are times when this is necessary. However, most people don’t want to be labeled, they want to understand themselves so they can change in a positive direction.?

Psychotherapy for personal growth can be helpful to anyone who wants to learn more about themselves and their role in the world.

Counseling for Health Care and Other Professionals

Health care and other professionals such as attorneys and executives have unique counseling needs. For example, often successful professionals can be extremely “high functioning” while still having alcohol and drug problems, anger management issues, or relationship problems that effect their work and families.

I currently facilitate two physician’s therapy groups and have worked with numerous health care professionals (nurses, veterinarians, etc). I also have experience monitoring treatment programs for professional licensing bodies, the courts, and employers.

All of my services are completely confidential and I have evening hours during the week to accommodate busy work schedules.
